The Role of Community Service in Shaping Responsible Global Citizens

At Legacy School, one of the best International Schools in Bangalore, community service is more than a one-off initiative, it is a way of life. Rooted in our core belief that education must go beyond academic achievement, service is woven into the very fabric of our school culture. From the Early Years to High School, our learners are continuously encouraged to think critically, act compassionately, and serve meaningfully.

This school-wide commitment comes to full bloom in the IB Diploma Programme, where students engage in Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) –  a rigorous and reflective component designed to build holistic, globally minded individuals. Through CAS, our high school learners not only explore their interests and challenge themselves, but also engage deeply with their communities to bring about real and lasting impact.

Service at Every Stage: A Shared Ethos

While CAS is a formalised part of the IB programme in high school, the spirit of service begins much earlier at Legacy. Students across all grades participate in various community projects that align with values of empathy, sustainability, inclusion, and responsibility. These experiences nurture a sense of agency and global citizenship from a young age.

Our initiatives span a wide range of causes and communities:

  • Green Diwali Campaigns: Promoting eco-conscious celebrations by raising awareness about pollution-free, sustainable practices during festive seasons.
  • Textbook Recycling Drives: Encouraging resource-sharing and waste reduction by collecting, organising, and redistributing gently used textbooks to those in need.
  • Volunteering at Manna – School for Children with Autism: Offering time, support, and companionship, while building understanding and respect for neurodiversity.
  • Health Camp for Support Staff: Organised and managed by students, these camps provide free health check-ups and wellness awareness for the school’s support staff.
  • Namma Nidhi: A student-led initiative that mobilises resources and donations for community support, especially during times of crisis.
  • PetroPawlis: An awareness campaign and donation drive focused on animal welfare and pet adoption.
  • Lake Cleaning Drives: Hands-on environmental action where students engage in cleaning and restoring local lakes, learning firsthand the value of ecological responsibility.

Impact That Lasts

These projects do more than tick boxes. They create opportunities for deep reflection, skill-building, and personal growth. Students learn the power of collaboration, leadership, and follow-through. They begin to understand complex social and environmental issues, not from a textbook, but by being on the ground, talking to people, and becoming part of the solution.

Through these experiences, learners gain the confidence to take initiative and the humility to serve.

Preparing Changemakers

In a world that needs not just thinkers, but doers, Legacy School Bangalore is proud to foster a generation of changemakers. Whether it’s a young learner planting their first sapling or a high school student leading a multi-phase community project, each act of service contributes to a larger purpose: building a more compassionate, equitable, and sustainable world.

By placing service at the heart of learning, Legacy School ensures that students graduate not only with academic excellence but with empathy, integrity, and a strong sense of social responsibility. They don’t just imagine a better world, they’re already helping to build it.
