Student council and its role in developing young leaders

At Legacy School, we believe that leadership is not a title, but a responsibility to others.

As one of the best IB schools in Bangalore, Legacy places student agency at the heart of our educational philosophy. We believe that when students are given ownership of their ideas and actions, they grow into thoughtful, confident, and capable individuals. We encourage our student leaders to see responsibility not just as something to check off a list, but as a meaningful part of who they are, in effectively impacting meaningful change for the betterment of all, in alignment with the highest values.

One of the key events that exemplifies this philosophy is our Annual Investiture Ceremony, which formally inducts the new Student Council. This occasion is more than a symbolic transition; it represents the passing of the torch from one cohort of student leaders to the next. The incoming council inherits not only a set of responsibilities but also a culture of leadership shaped by those who came before them—leaders who served with vision, dedication, and a genuine desire to make a difference in their school community.

At Legacy School, leadership isn’t limited to those holding titles. While our Student Council plays a key role in student life, we believe that encouraging leadership is a way of life—something embedded in our school culture. Whether or not students are part of the Council, they are given opportunities to take initiative, make decisions, and contribute meaningfully to the community. In collaboration with the Student Council, we work continuously to support student growth beyond the classroom. Through these roles and responsibilities, students build a diverse set of real-world skills that go far beyond academics.

While academic excellence is central to our mission, we place equal importance on the development of soft skills—such as critical thinking, empathy, adaptability, and teamwork. These are the qualities that empower our learners to navigate challenges, collaborate effectively, and thrive in an increasingly complex and dynamic world, with compassionate listening skills and supportive team dynamics.

Being part of the Student Council teaches students how to balance academic commitments with leadership responsibilities. It is a learning experience that is both challenging and enriching. Council members are given the autonomy to propose initiatives and lead projects, and they are encouraged to think critically about how students can become more engaged in all areas of school life. One such initiative, set to launch next year, is a student-led podcast. This platform will allow students to generate their own content, share perspectives, and engage peers in meaningful dialogue—while also learning to navigate guidelines and responsibilities associated with public-facing projects. It’s a step toward promoting civic engagement in a creative and relevant way.

Leadership at Legacy isn’t confined to a position or an event—it is a daily practice. Student Council members play an active role in the life of the school. They take part in organizing events, celebrating both student and staff achievements, and ensuring that school-wide initiatives align with the goals they’ve set for themselves as a team. We trust them to represent the values of the school, and we support them as they grow into leaders who are thoughtful, responsible, and ready to make a difference.

As one of the best schools in Bangalore for 11th and 12th, At Legacy School, we understand that leadership is a journey. By giving our students meaningful opportunities to lead, make decisions, and shape their community, we prepare them not just for success within the classroom and improvement within the school community, but for lives of purpose and impact in communities locally, nationally and globally.
